The Himalayan nation's Electoral Landscape Sees Significant Alliance Formed Between Media Personality and Former Musician Mayor

In a significant development ahead of the upcoming general election, a pair of prominent figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition comes in the wake of widespread and fatal young people's demonstrations that shook the country earlier this year and eventually led to the ouster of the sitting government.

A Pledge to Address Young People's Demands

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly vowed to prioritize the grievances raised by the younger generation. This promise follows the turbulent anti-corruption protests that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.

"Consensus must not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane following the deal was finalized.

The September revolt was triggered by widespread frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a spark for deeper resentment stemming from years of economic stagnation and persistent accusations of deep-rooted political corruption.

Terms of the New Political Agreement

According to the official pact, the positions for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling broad discontent with the nation's older political class. He has previously served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central figure in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He was instrumental in setting up the caretaker government that took over after the ousted administration was removed.

Broader Government Consultations Underway

In a separate event, the current interim prime minister over the weekend conducted consultations with a number of major political leaders. These talks included ex- prime ministers and the heads of other major parties, marking the first such gathering since the period of the protests.

After these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to state that holding a credible election is a shared responsibility. The message affirmed the government's commitment to guaranteeing a safe and open atmosphere for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
